Villagers placed a bid in the nick of time for a massive Ministry of Defence site up for auction.
But Shoreham Parish Council, which bid £1 for the site in Badgers Mount, wants only a small part of the land to build a children's playground in an area where there are no children's facilities.
The community was forced to give up a piece of ground by the memorial hall more than 15 years ago when the old hall was condemned and pulled down.
The £1 bid was lodged just before the deadline for the auction on November 2, which parish council chairman Gordon Clarke said he knew nothing about.
He claims the council had not been informed of the impending sale, despite meeting Defence Estates, the MoD's property arm, in the past year.
They had made it clear they were interested in buying a portion of the site, off Shacklands Road.
    he said.
The 48.7-acre site next to Badgers Mount Memorial Hall consists of 11 former ammunition storage bunkers and a number of ancillary buildings inside a perimeter fence.
