£3 million scheme to secure west Kent water supplies

Work is due to get underway on a £3 million scheme to protect drinking water supplies in west Kent.

In January 2011, South East Water submitted a planning application to Sevenoaks District Council to build a new pumping station at its Crampton’s Road Water Treatment Works in Sevenoaks which has now been approved.

The improvement work is vital as the existing pumping station which draws water from deep underground boreholes on the site – is now coming to the end of its operational life.

Joe Yip, Delivery Manager at South East Water, said:

This site helps supply, on average, around 18 million litres of top quality drinking water every day to over 40,000 customers in Sevenoaks and the surrounding area.

We need to improve the treatment and water quality processes so we can ensure those drinking water supplies remain safe on the long journey from our treatment works to customers’ taps.

Also, the existing building requires considerable on-going maintenance but is continuing to deteriorate as it gets older, so we’ve decided it’s now time to replace it.

Construction is due to get underway on Monday 13th February 2012 and it is anticipated that this scheme will complete by the end of 2012.

Joe Yip added:

We have carried out extensive ecology surveys to ensure the environment is protected from any temporary effects as a result of the new pumping station being built.

This includes surveys for protected species such as birds, badgers, bats, reptiles and Great Crested Newts. Furthermore, the construction programme also takes account of the seasonal activities of any protected species so our construction minimises disruption to their breeding habits.
